Chapter Ten

“Feudal as in… Ancient?” I frowned at Loretti’s cryptic words.

“Almost precisely.” He wagged his finger at me and then tapped a chunk of ash off the end of his cigar into the crystal ashtray. “They’ve mostly always been seers, and their main modus operandi is immortality.”

“And you’re saying they’ve succeeded?” Penny gasped in surprise. “I didn’t think… They can write their own future, do you mean?”

“In a way,” Loretti said offhandedly with a shrug. “I myself am but a lowly charmer, sweetheart. I don’t know too much about the ways of the seers.”

“We studied them back at Meloria,” Penny explained to us, and her eyes were full of an eager glimmer. “Feudal Japanese seers who could mold the future, manipulate time itself, and skip through it without becoming affected.”

“No wonder the Atroba are in with them…” I muttered under my breath.

“Mr. Loretti, what else can you tell us about them?” Penny asked as she eagerly leaned forward.

“Not much, I’m afraid.” He sighed heavily and then shrugged his slim shoulders again. “I know they’re a damn secretive bunch, and they’d quite naturally demand tribute for an audience.”

“What kind of tribute?” I asked the fight club owner.

“Technology,” Loretti explained with a smirk. “One thing their future writings never picked up on. I know for a fact that the ringleader is completely enamored with the entire damn concept of technology.”

“So, we just need to bring some sort of gadget, and we’re golden?” I clarified, and Mr. Loretti let out a burst of laughter.

“Why, you’re almost talking like a New Yorker, kid.” He wedged his cigar back between his teeth as he leaned back in his leather armchair. “But make no mistake. They’re formidable.”

“I’m sure we’ve gone up against worse,” I reasoned conversationally, but Mr. Loretti’s eyes suddenly became shrewd.

“I’m serious, Mr. Turner,” he warned. “Even we don’t fuck with them, and we’re magical Mafia.”

My ears pricked at the term ‘magical Mafia,’ but I chose to casually ignore it and keep the conversation steered to where I wanted it to go.

“What exactly makes them so formidable?” I asked.

“They torture, they manipulate, they care only for themselves…” Loretti spread his arms wide. “The list goes on. They come from an ancient time and still maintain those ideals from centuries past. They’ve manipulated their Feudal magic into modern day advances, and don’t be fooled by their appearances because they all look to be in their thirties perhaps, but most of them are in fact well over a century old.”

“They sound like a super fun bunch,” Demi muttered with a shake of her head.

“If you cross them, they will fuck you up,” Loretti replied flatly. “And as much as I like you guys, I’m not gonna be putting me or my men in their path. Everything you heard, you didn’t hear from me. Is that understood?”

“Crystal clear,” I quickly assured him. “Thank you again for your help and hospitality, Mr. Loretti.”

“My pleasure, boy.” Loretti clapped his hands so his golden rings clacked together, and he was suddenly back to his usual jovial self.
